RISING STAR Thanks so much to perths rising star Jarryd West for taking the time to tell me a little about himself and his passion for music! So Jarryd what made you want to sing as a career? Growing up music played a huge part in my life, my brother was a singer in a band and he inspired me to start singing, it's just something that not only helped me through the tough times but made the good times great times so it only makes sense to pursue it. Do you play any instruments? Are you kidding!? I'm lazy! Haha yeah not yet but slowly learning piano and guitar. What is your favourite musical instrument that you own? My fender acoustic guitar is definitely by far my favourite. Have you ever had singing lessons? I've had jazz singing lessons but they weren't really helping with the style I was into so I'm mostly self taught. Is your family musical? Apart from my brother not really, my mom and sister are professional shower singers but that's it. Why is music so important to you? Music is something I believe makes life worth living, you can be in the worst mood but then hear your favourite song and it'll help you, music is like breathing to me and you can't live without breathing! Which famous musicians do you admire and Why? Ed Sheeran is one singer I very much look up to, I mean he's RANGA and he can do it, what's not to admire? What have you learnt from watching the musicians you admire? No matter where you start in life there is no reason you can't make it to the top if you put your heart and mind to it. When did you perform at your first gig? When I was 8 I performed "go the distance" at my neighbours wedding. Have you been in competitions? And how far did you get? When I was 15 I was in the x-factor and I got to the top 100 in the country. How does it feel performing for people? Like a little orgasm but with a microphone in your hand What is your favourite musical memory? When I was 15 and had my first appearance on x-factor, the sound of the crowd and knowing that my voice had an affect on them. Did you have a song that inspired you growing up? Song? no. Songs? yes! Better together, how you remind me and higher. Do you get nervous before a performance or a competition? Not at all, nerves only hold you back. Do you perform in public? Radio, Tv, Local Events etc? I sure do, I do any performance I'm offered basically. How do you handle mistakes during performances? Laugh it off or pretend it never happened, you learn from mistakes. What's a typical day look like for you? Angry messages from ex girlfriends, a lots of singing and happy faces. What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous? Turn your nerves to excitement and people will love you. What do you think is required to be a good performer? Passion! A drive that says watch me, you won't regret it nor will you forget it! How often and for how long do you practice singing? Well probably about 3 hours a day. How do you balance music with other obligations, like friends, family and other commitments? With great difficulty! What do you like the most and what do you like the least about what you do? Most, doing what I love and making a living out of it. Least, bogans taking your mic. How do you get people to take you seriously as a musician? I do my hair really well and sing my heart out. How important is your "IMAGE" to you? Well at the end of the day my target audience are [somewhat] superficial, so pretty seriously. Are you a creative sort of person? Being an artist you sort of have to be! Have you ever broken any of your equipment? How often do you upgrade? I upgrade when I have the money but I haven't actually broken any of my gear. Who is your mentor in life, who do you aspire to be like? Hugh Hefner... I mean... Ed Sheeran or maybe the very first Jarryd West! Have you had any crazy fans? Wait you can get not crazy fans? What's your best fan experience? My biggest fan becoming one of my best friends 😘 What is something NO one knows about you? Jesus...I'm pretty much an open book! Where can people find you? Facebook? Twitter? Instagram? [Performing] In Murray street mall most days and on any social media under Jarryd west or Jarryd west music. Where do you see yourself in 5 years time? Hopefully doing a world tour!! What is 2016 looking like for you? Anything exciting happening? So far so good, lots of gigs and some things I can't talk about as of yet. If people want to see you perform, where is the best place to catch you? Murray street mall [Perth] most days! Other than singing what else do you enjoy doing? Cooking, painting, drawing...that real manly stuff!
