WHY YOU NO SHIMMY JIMMY? Thank you so much Jessica for taking the time to answer some questions, I really appreciate it. I'm very excited so lets get started! So firstly Jessica most people will be familiar with you from the movie "Blended" as the perky and charismatic ginger! What was it like to play such a fun character? Ginger was incredibly fun to play. Blended was my first big movie and playing such a fun, silly character was a dream come true. What was it like to work along side Adam sandler, Drew Barrymore, Bella Thorne and Kevin nealon? Everyone on set was extremely nice and easy to work with. Kevin was an amazing scene partner and made me feel very comfortable. They let us improvise quite a bit and I loved doing bits with a few of my comedic idols. I read that you were a bit of a sandler fan, it must have been exciting to work with one of the biggest comedic actors in hollywood? Sandler films and SNL were a huge part of my childhood. I watched Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison hundreds of times. I was incredibly starstruck when we first met but that quickly faded. He's just the nicest guy. The best. How did you react when you found out that you had gotten the part? I was in shock. I couldn't believe it. I called my parents after talking with my reps and they couldn't believe it either. Now before you stared in blended you're background was mostly comedy and improv, as a graduate from north western university I believe. What sparked your interest in comedy and improv? I've always been a performer. I started doing impressions of tv and movie characters when I was 5 years old. I was in plays and competed in Speech and Debate in school and after Northwestern I moved to LA and took some improv classes at UCB and Groundlings. That's how it all started. Have you always wanted to do comedy and acting? Deep down I always wanted to pursue a career in comedy. I originally moved out to LA wanting to focus on doing voice over for animation. But sometimes those jobs are harder to land than on-camera work. Now some people may not know this but you voiced the character "Dahlia" on bobs burgers, is the process different only doing a voice compared to on screen acting? I LOVE Bob's Burgers. The show is incredible and the cast and scripts are hilarious. The recording session is quick and fun and, because the other actors are in the studio with you, they let you play around and improvise a bit. If I could do that for the rest of my life I'd be incredibly happy. Jessica the current project you're working on is "Wrecked" and you play Florence, how has it been so far, are you enjoying it? Wrecked was a wonderful experience. The cast is super tight because we shoot on location in Puerto Rico so we all bonded. It's a rare show in such a crowded marketplace because it combines action and comedy. It's the Indiana Jones of basic cable. ;) Can't wait for season 2!! Your main pathway is comedy, but if you weren't doing comedy what do you think you'd be doing? If I wasn't doing comedy I'd probably be a speech pathologist. Or a ski instructor. Other than wrecked, do you have anything else in the works that you can tell us about? I'm taking it pretty easy during my hiatus. It's been a slow, hot summer in LA. I'm shooting a little role in Sandler's next film in a couple weeks and also concentrating on writing. If you could tell yourself something 10 years ago, what would it be, would you have any advice for young Jessica? I'd say "Relax. You're fine. Just keep working hard and keep being nice to everyone." Is there anything you would change about your life right now? Not that I can think of. Where would we be without family and friends to support us right... Who's been the biggest support for you? My family has been incredibly supportive. I love them dearly. Also my agent Ayala Cohen is a dream and I trust her opinion more than I trust my own! What is something you like to live your life by? Same as my advice to myself: Work hard. Be nice. Lastly, to anyone who is thinking about acting as a career do you have any wise words of wisdom for them? Don't burn any bridges. Do your best with any opportunity given to you. Well Jessica I can't thank you enough for taking the time to share a little about yourself, I can't wait to see what's next for you! Have a nice day! MUM-TREPRENEUER I Spoke with mother of 2 and entrepreneur Chloe from Townville, about the ups and downs of mother-hood, marriage and trying to juggle a home business after a major interstate move! Thanks to Chloe for finding the time to answer some questions! So you're a wife, young mother of 2 and an entrepreneur or should I say a "Mum-trepreneur" that can't be easy to manage? Umm well it definitely holds its challenges. Kids need loads of attention, as do husbands and trying to build an empire. So it's been a bit of a challenge trying to give everything 100% and equal time so no one and nothing gets left out. That's including the house work Hahahah! You have two little boys Aiden and Donte, how old are they and what are they like? Good little boys I hope! Ohh yes the boys... Aiden is 3yo, he's just beautiful. Aiden is actually autistic, so his very full on but his so bright and soooo sweet, such a mummies boy. Then there is baby Donnie (Donte), he's nearly 6mo, so he's still very dependent of me. His pretty funny and so cuddly! Literally wants nothing but cuddles all day every day, so that comes with its own challenges {Lol}! They sound like a handful, in the BEST way! So on the days when you're a little exhausted, you've got things to do and the boys are having one of those days, how do you cope? What helps you get through? Umm coffee! haha no I don't know really, I just have to get things done. Being exhausted doesn't minimise my day. You recently married, gave birth and moved interstate, what's it been like with all those big changes in just 1 short year? Exciting I can imagine! Honestly it's been really difficult on us all. The isolation is definitely the hardest part for me because It's easy to feel completely alone when moving interstate, especially for a husband who is away, working so often. With your husband working away often and being fairly new to town, It must be hard to be so far from your family then, I can imagine they have been very supportive? Yeah it's been very hard losing all my support systems and social life. My mum has been my rock from a distance throughout this! Your hubby (Kane) seems like a wonderful man, how did you two meet? Haha umm honestly... We met on the dating app "plenty of fish". He's been so good for me in many ways, but he's still a big shit head {Lol}. I saw pictures of your wedding (you looked stunning by the way) What about the proposal? Was it romantic? It was just lovely. Simple! He was away for work as he's in the defence force, he was suppose to be non-contactable until December 19. Randomly I heard a knock my door on December 17 expecting my mum or best friend to be there, I was, pleasantly surprised, to see my now husband at my door on 1 knee. Not even an inkling he would be home early. Although as the story goes I was sooo surprised that I shut the door in his face Hahahah Ooops! Now I know you run your own business, what do you do exactly? Well, I sell high end cosmetics and skin care for an amazing company that supports victims of sexual abuse... Both women and children, which is something very close to home for me. Something I feel so strongly about. YOUNIQUE! Feel free to check out any information on my website www.youniqueproducts.com/ChloeJLittle I have currently got 2 wonderful ladies as a part of my younique team and always looking to expand! That's truly AMAZING! What an incredible cause to represent and work for. So what was it that interested the most about YOUNIQUE? Just everything that Younique stands for, They actually fund a retreat that victims of sexual abuse can be sent to, to learn to deal with the abuse adequately so that they can move on and live a happier healthier life . That is incredible! So how have you been finding Running a business from home? Well it's tough to get a home business going but it's much more convenient with 2 young children. What's the most reward thing about your business for you? Watching my boys grow and never missing a thing and knowing the hard work I put in is helping a victim of abuse, somewhere be happy again. Looking back over the past 5 years, I'm sure you've had many ups and downs. What would be perhaps 1 of the lowest and 1 of the highest points and how do you think they have helped you to become the person you are? Oh wow Aimee getting heavy with me here haha. Low points, hmm well before my first son born, who is now just over 3, I was heading down a really bad path just drinking & partying, no good at all... Until I got pregnant and that just completely changed everything I was. So I guess whatever was in my head that was sending me down that path was my lowest point. But my babies are definitely my highest! They are so challenging, each in their own ways, but they're also the most rewarding things. I couldn't ask for anything more. If you could tell yourself then what you know now, would you have any advice for yourself 5 years ago? Yes... Boys sucks hahaha. No honestly I would tell myself I don't need men or drinking. I would tell myself to pursue my love of fitness, personal training, fitness competitions, the whole lot! Given the chance do you think you would change anything about your life or how you've gotten to where you are? Honestly no! Things are tough at the moment but they won't be bad forever. I love my family and I'll grow to love my new life in Townsville. Well chloe thank you so much for chatting to me about married life, being a kick ass mum and inspiring us to work hard for what you want! You're doing such a great job and I'm proud of how far you've come! or Click here to find out a little information on Autism and where you can help for yourself or your child or call 1800 ASPECT (1800 277328) TELL ALL 20'S A huge thanks to sandrina for sharing her experience and hopefully inspiring others like she's done for me! So what are you studying exactly? Im studying bachelor of social science, basically like social work. Studying bachelor of social science, what will that enable you to do in the future? What is the ultimate goal for your career? I could get into social Work industries. So I can work with kids, families, people who are homeless, basically anyone who is troubled in some way, who needs help. That's fantastic! So what made you choose to do bachelor of social science? I love helping people, its what I’m good at. Im always there for those who are in need and it always makes my day when I can help someone who needs it! What did you want to be growing up? Well… According to my mother, I wanted to be a garbage man! A little weird I know! As I got older though I wanted to be a veterinarian, until I realised I may have to put some animals down. Then I wanted to be a flight attendant, until I realised I was too short! I was devastated. Finally I realised helping people was what I was good at so I thought… "why not get payed for it?" So how was school for you? Was it easy or do you struggle with certain things? What was your favourite subject? School was hard for me. I was bullied a fair bit, almost everyday from an early as I can remember. I was often called many foul names and even had a book thrown across my head for ignoring them. Maths was always my worst subject, so luckily I won’t be in a profession that needs a lot of math! English was always my best subject, and my favourite, because I was good at it of course! Now I know you struggled a fair bit with bullying, how do you feel the those experiences have affected you now? Being bullied was tough for me and I have to admit finishing school was a great day for me! I have learnt a lot of the years and I think being bullied has given me a great insight into how to help people. Having that sort of experience, going through what I went through will be able to help me in helping some people who may be going through what I have. No one deserves to be treated with disrespect, so I will be able to put my own experiences into practice when helping those less fortunate. I feel everyone deserves the best. How did you ultimately deal with that? Did you just get over it or was it more complicated than that? I kind of just pushed through it everyday. Obviously there were days where I didn’t want to go to school, but I had to. So ultimately I just stuck up with it and had a cry when I got home. It hurt me that most of the teachers saw what was happening and didn’t do anything about it, I mostly had to deal with it all on my own. What's was it that got you through that? Because I know that a lot of young kids struggle with bullying and sometimes can't handle it... Was there ever moments like that for you? As I said above, some days it was hard and I wanted to skip school. Which i did occasionally. I did have a couple of close friends that were there for me and occasionally lied to teachers for me so I could get out of class and away from the bullies, which was always a relief. If you could tell yourself back then what you know now, what would you say? Just be yourself, don’t try to please those around you because if they liked you for you they would stick around, and if not then they are most definitely not worth your time. Don’t spend your time worrying about what others think of you and just move forward, your life will be so much better! Despite what you've been through is definitely sounds like you've come out on the better side and so talking about positives, what's been a great and positive moment for you? Something that you will never forget! I am the first person in my family to complete high school and move onto university. Right now that is my greatest achievement. It makes sense much prouder of myself that I got through some of the worst years of my life and come out on top. Do you have any hobbies outside of Uni? What do you do in your free time? M Let me guess you collect stamps? I don’t collect stamps! I LOVE reading and I do, collect books! I just love the smell of newly bought books.i also used to play netball and wouldn’t mind getting back onto that at some point. That's really interesting, why reading and netball? I have always loved reading, I enjoy just getting lost in a good story. It’s a perfect get away if I’ve had a rough day. And as for netball, I just enjoy it, I like to think I’m pretty good at it too, a lot better than soccer or any of those other ‘manly’s ports. Knowing that you enjoy a good read, what is your favourite book and why? I have so many to choose from! If I had to choose I would have to say ‘The Ancient Future Trilogy’ by Tracy Harding. It’s such a fantastic book, well written and it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading it! I hear you're a bit of a supernatural fan, what is it about two ridiculously good looking guys hunting demons that makes everyone swoon! Who doesn’t know that?! They are just too good looking. But I think the story line of it is brilliant, I love the whole demon hunting thing, while also developing the characters story. You grow to love them! Reminds me of charmed (which I also loved). Have you ever met any of the cast? Who would you like to meet? Of course other than Sam and dean! Unfortunately I haven’t. Its on my bucket list though. Dean all the way! There is a supernatural convention in Sydney that I think they go to sometimes so I gotta keep an eye out for that! I heard you love to travel, where in the world would you go if you could? I would love to travel to Ireland! I don’t know why but I have ways been fascinated with Irish culture. It seems like such a beautiful place to visit. Wow that's awesome I've always wanted to go to Ireland to! Ok lastly sandrina, do you have anything you'd like to say to those reading this who may relate to you? Remember, everyone of you reading this to today is beautiful. You are all wonderful human beings put on this earth for special reasons. Just take each day one day at a time and you will get there. SINGER/SONGWRITER Firstly Julian, thank you so much for taking the time to have a chat and answer some questions! I really appreciate it. I've been keeping up with your Facebook page, watching all your covers. How long does it take to put a cover and video together? It usually only takes me a couple days to put together my covers on Facebook/YouTube. With over 16,000 Facebook likes, 67,000 Twitter followers and almost 21,000 Instagram followers. That's such an incredible following... How does it feel to have that kind of support? It's pretty amazing to have a large amount of followers on my social media accounts! Knowing that there are many people who are interested in my career/music is great to know and I hope they enjoy what I upload etc Let's take it back to 2012 you were on X-Factor Australia, auditioning solo and later being put into a group known as "The Collective". You boys came in 3rd and subsequently signed with Sony, after releasing 4 singles as a group, you all eventually parted ways in 2015... How was that experience for you? X Factor as I've told many people would be up there with one of the best experiences of my life. The 3 years after that were also amazing! Being able to record music, tour the world with the boys and meet so many amazing people and artists was a crazy experience. What's life been like after The Collective? and are you still friends with the other guys? It's been a bit different. Having a little time off has been great for me but I'm right in the middle of many big things now. Of course I am, we still talk occasionally and make sure we keep up to date with what we're all up to. I saw that you're in LA, are you there for business or pleasure? What's the plan? I am here for business, but that's all I will say for now! Now I have a question from a fan of yours, Zoe! "Julian what moment did you decide to be a singer?" I guess I have always wanted to be a singer/performer since a very young age. I don't think there was a specific moment that I realised. Who is your biggest musical inspiration? I have many musicians I look up to and admire, but my biggest inspiration would have to be Justin Bieber. Now I know you're a bit of a Harry Potter fan, my favourite character is LUNA (Evanna lynch) who is your favourite character and why? My favourite character would have to be Harry. I admire his courage and how he is always looking out for everyone else. He is also a great friend. You got the chance to visit London this time last year and visit the Harry Potter studios, that's incredible! How much fun was that? It was probably one of the best days of the trip! Being able to walk on the actual sets and see the props used was amazing. Felt like I was in the wizarding world. I also know that you're a massive fan of Justin Bieber, not only have you covered his song "Where Are Ü Now" but you got to meet him, how did it feel meeting one of your idols? It was a pretty surreal moment meeting someone you've admired and looked up to for so long. I really hope I'll get the chance to meet him again. Another fan question Julian, this one comes from an anonymous fan (M)! "Julian, out of all your caps and beanies which one is your favourite?" I don't think I have a favourite cause I usually wear them all, but some of them are a bit more special than others. So Julian what can we expect from you this year? Anything big happening? There are many plans for my music this year but at the moment I can't share any details. You can definitely expect to see more covers on my accounts though! Carn the 🍐, you're an ambassador for the PAFC and recently went to the season launch, that must have been exciting? It was great! Being heavily involved with the club I have supported since I was a kid is amazing and I hope we continue the relationship! Julian, I think a lot of the female readers would like to know... Are you a single pringle? I am single! Julian, I have one more question from your fan, Courtney! "Julian, do you have any gigs coming up soon?" At the moment there aren't any public shows booked, just private events! If you keep updated on my accounts you'll be the first to know when they come up. Lastly, for those who have been living under a rock and haven't heard you yet, where can they catch you... Twitter? Facebook? Instagram? You can follow me on most social media! Instagram - JulianDeVizio Twitter - JulianDeVizio Facebook - Julian De Vizio YouTube - Julian De Vizio also find me on snapchat Snapchat - JGDV95 Julian thank you so much for answering some questions it's been a pleasure chatting! I do wish you all the very best, you're extremely talented and I'm excited to see what the future holds for you. Thanks for having me! "ONE OF THE BEST EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE!" Motherhood I know a fair few new mums and a lot of them are young, even teenagers. There is a huge pressure put on young mums now days and a lot of judgement, how do you feel about that, did you get much of that from people? I didn't get judged from people really, apart from a few family members that said I should get rid of the baby because I didn't have my own house or anything. But I got my own house before I gave birth and I didn't care what people thought. So when did you find out you were pregnant, were you surprised, panicked, excited? I was excited, I found out when I was about two weeks pregnant. How did the people around you react when you told them? Like your friends and family? Some were shocked, some didn't care. What was the hardest part about finding out and just being pregnant? Was there things you found difficult to handle? I didn't find things difficult to handle, I just had a bit of back pains. What was the best thing about being pregnant? (Other than obviously having your baby haha) Feeling the baby kick and wriggle, finding out the sex and knowing I was starting my own family. Did you have any major cravings? Extra pickles on my cheese burger. What about finding out the sex of your baby, how did you feel? I was impatient!! Where there any complications during pregnancy and the birth? His heart rate dropped so we had to get him out quick so I had an episiotomy, they had to cut me down there. When did you start going into labour and how long were you in labour for? 2am and I had a four and a half hour labour. Was it natural birth or C-Section? Natural! How did you feel during labour, were you scared at all? Not scared, I just wanted him out because it felt like my ads were going to tear into two haha. You named you little boy Jet ragan Blanchard, when did you decide on a name and is there any special reason behind it? I decided on this name soon as I found out the gender and he was name after a person in the group "Hollywood undead" George ragan (Johnny 3 tears - J3T) Now what about when jet finally arrived? Was it morning or night? What about his weight? Was he heavy haha? He was born at 6:31 am and was 6 pound 1, He was tiny! How did it feel to finally have him in your arms after 9 months? It was amazing I love him so much! How long did you stay in hospital for? 1 night. How was the first day and night for you, how did it feel to look at your son and know that he had finally arrived and he was yours to hold and love? It was awesome, the feeling of being a mum, I couldn't stop looking at him. Is he a good sleeper and eater? Sleeps all day, okay at night and oh my god he's a little fatty when it comes to feeding! Do you breast feed or bottle feed him? Both! What are you most excited for in the coming years? Watching him grow and seeing what he achieves, and watching him take his first steps and when he first talks. What are you least excited for? Haha sleepless nights! Is there anything you would do differently throughout the entire journey? Nothing!! Do you have any advice for new mums? Make sure you sleep when baby sleeps and get pleanty of sleep whilst you're pregnant you'll miss your sleep when baby comes. Thanks so much for sharing your story Courtney I know you'll be the best mum to jet! "I love him so much..." Click the title "MORHERHOOD" for some fun and useful tips on being a first time mother.
JOURNALISM I was fortunate enough and feel very lucky to have been able to pick the brains of someone I truly look up to, a fellow journalist and blogger as well as social and entertainment presenter, the one and only THOMAS MARLOW! Firstly thank you much for taking the time to answer some questions for me, I'm really excited to have a chat with you because you were a big reason as to why I decided to embark on the adventure that is the journalism industry. So I do really appreciate it. That's so kind, Aimee! It's my absolute pleasure to have a chat. Now firstly Tom, why journalism... Did you wake up one day and suddenly decide that it was what you wanted to do? Funnily enough, it was actually Judge Judy who really put me on the pathway of wanting to pursue a career in broadcasting. When I was younger, I watched Judge Judy religiously and I used to tell people that I wanted to be a judge. As I grew older, I learnt that one simply does not just become a judge out of nowhere, so I looked into other avenues. I also watched news and current affairs programmes very regularly, and at the age of about eight or nine, not really knowing what a 'journalist' was, I decided that I would like a career telling stories in front of a camera. Since then, that vision has condensed a little, and I eventually narrowed it down to broadcasting journalism - it still involves getting justice for people (the quality that I liked in Judge Judy), plus it involves videos, radio and television which I love. How old where you when you started to really pursue a journalistic career? When I was nearing the end of high school, I began to do some research into what I needed to do to get my foot in the door. I emailed and met with a variety of different journalists and presenters and chose the best option that I thought would put me in good stead to kick start my journey. After school I took some time off, and then eventually I started university when I was about nineteen. I also have a position as a breakfast newsreader for a Perth radio station - that job fell into place about seven months ago. I also work as a swimming instructor and a lifeguard - two jobs that are very different to journalism, but both that I really enjoy. Now Tom, Is it safe to say you were a clever and well behaved student who studied hard at school? Absolutely not! Well, I suppose I wasn't terrible, but I certainly didn't put much emphasis on the academic side of things. I used to always get into trouble for talking in class. A lot, actually. I went through a bit of a strange period in my middle school years where I made some poor choices, but I rectified that in my final year of school. In Year Twelve I was the school Head Boy, I was a senior journalist in the journalism club and I belonged to five different music ensembles, so I felt like I'd left a positive mark on the school, and it felt as if it was a well rounded end to my time there. Thinking back, I had such a fabulous year in Year Twelve, and I managed to get the score that I needed to land me a position in media studies at university, as well as having a lot of fun! Have you studied journalism professionally or are you more self taught? I am still in the process of studying - I'm doing a degree in Mass Communications, specialising in Journalism and Public Relations at Curtin University in Perth. Who has been the biggest influence in your life, both professionally and personally? That's a tough one... Personally, my Mum has been very influential. I am very close with her and I have been nothing but inspired by the way she has conducted herself. She's faced many hurdles, and she continues to stride through life with a sense of grace and determination that I can only dream of having. Professionally, I would have to say that Rick Ardon and Susannah Carr from Channel Seven are my biggest inspirations - they've been anchoring news alongside each other for over thirty years, and their depth of knowledge and profound ability for news presenting is nothing short of amazing. Just watching them every night, as I have done for my entire life, has taught me a lot. They've both personally helped me out in different ways, which I feel very privileged about, and I was so thrilled when they agreed to appear in my story for Telethon. My heart aches for the day when they eventually stop working...My life literally won't be the same! What has been one of the biggest highlights of your career? Another tough one! Can I have more than one? There's been so many - and really, I've only just begun. I'd say that interviewing Susannah Carr who I talked about earlier was a significant highlight. Watching someone on television for your entire life and then spending an afternoon with them is quite indescribable. I was also lucky enough to fly to Melbourne for the 30th anniversary of the Aussie drama Neighbours to do a special package - that was an absolute ball! I've had many highlights though - I've been back and forth across the country quite a few times, I've worked alongside Michelle Bridges, represented WA at different conferences, and met so many people who I admire... It's hard to narrow it down. Who has been your favourite person to interview so far? Probably Susannah Carr. She has an energy about her that is just so infectious. Aussie actress Kym Valentine from Neighbours was pretty surreal, too. She is such a charismatic lady and was incredibly engaged throughout the interview. Now Tom, I see you have almost 20,000 Facebook likes. That's awesome! How does that make you feel having that kind of support and following? It's lovely! I am blown away at how well people have received 'Tom's Talk Time'. I'm now reaching over 70 different countries which I am pretty proud of. I'm a realist, though, and of course there are ups and downs. I have good and bad days, and some people are really quite cruel. I've been called all sorts of names and I've read some awful things about me, the way I look and my work, but on the whole, aside from a few people who quite often are just keyboard warriors, most people are really supportive. Speaking of support, how supportive have your family been of you and your career? The support from my Mum and my sister has been phenomenal - I don't think there has been one post that they haven't discussed with me! They're also really great at providing me with constructive criticism - they know when I've missed the mark, and I think it's important to hear that. My best friend, Charlie, has given me a lot too. I have known him since we were both babies, so to have him working with me on a lot of different projects has been really terrific. Also I remember something about you in the papers late last year, how did that come about? Yes, well the most recent story was when I was appointed my role as a breakfast newsreader at RTRfm in Perth. I'd also just come back from Sydney after doing an internship at Network Ten. The other few times were in regards to my P!nk tattoo... The singer autographed my wrist and I had it tattooed over straight away. Now THAT is a story! I was over the moon! It actually made the news in seven different countries! A little bird told me, Tom, that you and the adorable Telethon star, little miss Emily Prior, are practically best friends - isn't she just the cutest, most inspirational little girl! How did you meet her? Absolutely! I met Em when I was doing a video story for Tom's Talk Time about Telethon. I connected with her and her family instantly, and I just fell in love with her courage and kick-ass determination! All of her family are so tremendously kind to me, and I really do think that I've made some friends for life. We all have dreams and aspirations, so what are yours, where do you see yourself in say 5 years time? Well, in five years time I hope to be working for a major news network. I hope that I've got a few more qualifications under my belt and that I've travelled. I hope that I've purchased my own house too. What can we expect from you this year? Anything exciting? Oh, yes! In September I'm temporarily moving to London! Before I leave, I'm hoping to work on something special with King Edward Memorial Hospital (I was born there), as well as producing a story on the WA Cat Haven. I'm also looking at releasing some Tom's Talk Time merchandise - that's going to be a big task, but I'm sure it will be lots of fun! Now Tom I think you're fantastic and I'm sure a lot of other people do to, so where might people be able to keep up to date with you. Facebook? Twitter? Instagram? Thank you! I have a private Facebook for friends and family only. That's under Thomas Marlow. I've had to say that because I have had one nasty person in particular try and imitate me by creating a false profile and tarnishing my name. That has since been shut down. My public Facebook page where all of my news related work goes is titled 'Tom's Talk Time'. I am also @TomMarlow_ on Twitter and @officialthomas28 on Instagram (the official at the front of Thomas is a long running joke with a couple of my friends, please don't think that I think I'm that important!). Finally Tom, Do you have any advice for aspiring young writers out there and future journalists like myself? I'd say that if you are providing some form of news, you HAVE to live and breathe it. Make sure you're fully aware of what is happening locally, nationally and internationally. Also, my suggestion is that you make time to meet people. There have been so many times that I have been at work all day, and I've had to go straight to a function later in the evening. I'm human and I get tired, and sometimes I've wanted to just drive home, but I've pushed through, and often really enjoyed it. Meeting new people is fabulous - and it leads to so many other opportunities. You need to also be comfortable going to events by yourself - and you need to be able to confidently stand your ground. Also remember to have fun with it, create all sorts of content and read as many books as you can. I'm still learning every single day, and I wouldn't change my life for the world. Thank you so much for chatting with me Tom, it's an absolute pleasure! Anytime, Aimee - and good luck with your future studies! "I'm still learning every single day!" This year I started a business course and was fortunate enough to meet this amazing woman, it really didn't take long at all before we became friends. I recently learnt that Melly suffers from a condition called "ENDOMETRIOSIS" Curious to know more about the condition and Melly eager to share her story in the hopes to spread awareness as well as showing other woman they aren't alone, I decided to ask a little more about the condition and what exactly it entails. For those who are wondering what endometriosis? Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to that, which normally lines the uterus, grows in other parts of the body. Who does endometriosis affect? Studies suggest that it affects 5 – 10% of menstruating women in Australia. What happens when you have endometriosis? The 'stray' endometrial tissue is referred to as endometrial implants or endometrial lesions. Endometrial lesions are commonly found
The condition is associated with severe pelvic and period pain, heavy periods and infertility, all of which can have a negative impact on the lives of affected women, their family and friends. Pain is the most common symptom experienced by women with endometriosis. There are many ways that endometrial lesions can cause pain. Lesions cause irritation and inflammation to the tissue and organs that surround them. Scar tissue forming around the lesions can result in the pelvic organs being stuck together. These adhesions can mean that the stuck together organs are unable to move freely, making movements such as ovulation, sexual intercourse or going to the toilet painful. Over time, the endometrial lesions on the ovaries may enlarge and form cysts. These cysts are called 'chocolate cysts' because they are filled with old blood which is chocolate-like in colour. What are some symptoms of endometriosis? Endometriosis symptoms vary widely depending on the location of the implants in the body. They can include:
While women typically experience symptoms at the time of their period, because there are many different types of pain experienced by women with endometriosis, symptoms can occur at other times and can continue after menopause. The anticipation of pain or discomfort, recurrence of symptoms following treatment and fertility problems, can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety, anger, hopelessness and stress amongst sufferers. How do you know if you have endometriosis? You can never really 100% know if you have it or not, generally if a family member has it or had it and got everything removed after the right steps being followed ie 2 kids and being at the age of 30+ But the only way to check is to ask for a Laparoscopy (aka Key hole surgery), this is the only way to find out if you truly have it or not. But of course knowing all the information doesn't always help, having the knowledge doesn't necessarily prepare you for what comes after finding out the diagnosis! I asked melly how she felt after the diagnosis and what happened through out the process? "I started to worry as soon as I turned 18, my periods were heavier more painful and I couldn't have sex at all because it honestly hurt so much. I'd cripple over in pain and tears streaming down my face" What was involved with your diagnosis? "I fought with my Dr for months about my pain and struggles and she didn't even consider the fact that I might have it, she made me take 3 pregnancy tests in a time period of 1 week, I remember the following week I walked in furious and told her to send me to a specialist cause I had honestly had enough, I needed to know what was going on, my sister and mum both had it so it was a possibility, but I was hoping that I had been lucky enough to not get it, boy was I wrong. During the time of waiting for my hospital appointment I had tried several types of pain killers and anti-inflammatory tablets in hopes to dim and or shut out the pain so I could live a normal day without being in pain all the time." Did the pain killers work? "They worked for awhile then my body built up a tolerance to them" How did you feel before finding out? "As my appointment date drew nearer I started to freak out a little and wondered if I was even able to have kids, if I'd be able to start my own family, and it honestly effected me to a point I was feeling really down and depressed about life. When were you diagnosed? "I was officially diagnosed in August of 2015. I had fought since I was 18 years old with Dr's thinking I was full of shit and I was making up this story, I got diagnosed at 19" How did it feel to think no one was taking you seriously? "its sad to think that Dr's treat young people like they are stupid and have no idea what we are on about." So after your diagnosis and treatment, I guess things went back to normal right? "After my 2 week recovery I returned to work and noticed I had been replaced by someone new and got told the same day I would be finishing up the following week, of course this broke me, I literally just found out I had 'Endo' and to top it off I lost my job, already suffering from depression I withdrew myself from the world, I didn't go out, I hardly even spoke to family and my partner at the time, I was ready to give up, I felt horrible." So how did you find peace? "After awhile I gave up caring what happened next, I chose to say fuck it a lot more and to just live life the way I felt I could, things got easier, looked brighter, and eventually I got myself to a happy point again." Thank you for sharing your story, is there anything you'd like to tell other women suffering endo? "No thank you for taking the time to help me spread my story, It literally means the world to me that someone is willing to take the time to do this... I'd tell them they are not alone in this, there is a group on Facebook full of women who are currently living with endo and going through their own struggles, its a support group where you are free to talk about what you're feeling and to gather other alternative ideas on how to cope with it." Whats the page called? The page is called "Endometriosis Perth Sisterhood of Support" They also hold functions for get togethers and Marches helping to spread the word of what endo really is. "You are never alone!" Click the title "ENDOMETRIOSIS" to go to endometriosis Australia and help put an end to endo!
or Click the "Endometriosis Perth Sisterhood of Support" to be directed to the support group to talk with other women just like yourself. There will also be a link in the groups bio for loved ones of those suffering from endo where you can get help on how to deal with it and how to gain knowledge for yourself. RISING STAR Thanks so much to perths rising star Jarryd West for taking the time to tell me a little about himself and his passion for music! So Jarryd what made you want to sing as a career? Growing up music played a huge part in my life, my brother was a singer in a band and he inspired me to start singing, it's just something that not only helped me through the tough times but made the good times great times so it only makes sense to pursue it. Do you play any instruments? Are you kidding!? I'm lazy! Haha yeah not yet but slowly learning piano and guitar. What is your favourite musical instrument that you own? My fender acoustic guitar is definitely by far my favourite. Have you ever had singing lessons? I've had jazz singing lessons but they weren't really helping with the style I was into so I'm mostly self taught. Is your family musical? Apart from my brother not really, my mom and sister are professional shower singers but that's it. Why is music so important to you? Music is something I believe makes life worth living, you can be in the worst mood but then hear your favourite song and it'll help you, music is like breathing to me and you can't live without breathing! Which famous musicians do you admire and Why? Ed Sheeran is one singer I very much look up to, I mean he's RANGA and he can do it, what's not to admire? What have you learnt from watching the musicians you admire? No matter where you start in life there is no reason you can't make it to the top if you put your heart and mind to it. When did you perform at your first gig? When I was 8 I performed "go the distance" at my neighbours wedding. Have you been in competitions? And how far did you get? When I was 15 I was in the x-factor and I got to the top 100 in the country. How does it feel performing for people? Like a little orgasm but with a microphone in your hand What is your favourite musical memory? When I was 15 and had my first appearance on x-factor, the sound of the crowd and knowing that my voice had an affect on them. Did you have a song that inspired you growing up? Song? no. Songs? yes! Better together, how you remind me and higher. Do you get nervous before a performance or a competition? Not at all, nerves only hold you back. Do you perform in public? Radio, Tv, Local Events etc? I sure do, I do any performance I'm offered basically. How do you handle mistakes during performances? Laugh it off or pretend it never happened, you learn from mistakes. What's a typical day look like for you? Angry messages from ex girlfriends, a lots of singing and happy faces. What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous? Turn your nerves to excitement and people will love you. What do you think is required to be a good performer? Passion! A drive that says watch me, you won't regret it nor will you forget it! How often and for how long do you practice singing? Well probably about 3 hours a day. How do you balance music with other obligations, like friends, family and other commitments? With great difficulty! What do you like the most and what do you like the least about what you do? Most, doing what I love and making a living out of it. Least, bogans taking your mic. How do you get people to take you seriously as a musician? I do my hair really well and sing my heart out. How important is your "IMAGE" to you? Well at the end of the day my target audience are [somewhat] superficial, so pretty seriously. Are you a creative sort of person? Being an artist you sort of have to be! Have you ever broken any of your equipment? How often do you upgrade? I upgrade when I have the money but I haven't actually broken any of my gear. Who is your mentor in life, who do you aspire to be like? Hugh Hefner... I mean... Ed Sheeran or maybe the very first Jarryd West! Have you had any crazy fans? Wait you can get not crazy fans? What's your best fan experience? My biggest fan becoming one of my best friends 😘 What is something NO one knows about you? Jesus...I'm pretty much an open book! Where can people find you? Facebook? Twitter? Instagram? [Performing] In Murray street mall most days and on any social media under Jarryd west or Jarryd west music. Where do you see yourself in 5 years time? Hopefully doing a world tour!! What is 2016 looking like for you? Anything exciting happening? So far so good, lots of gigs and some things I can't talk about as of yet. If people want to see you perform, where is the best place to catch you? Murray street mall [Perth] most days! Other than singing what else do you enjoy doing? Cooking, painting, drawing...that real manly stuff! "Being realistic is the most common taken path to mediocrity" Click on the highlighted social medias to be directed to Jarryds Facebook, Instagram and/or Twitter!
